Earth or No? – Fantasy Worldbuilding Basics Part II

Welcome back, everyone!  I hope that you all had a fantastic holiday season!  As for me, I’m back from my all too brief hiatus.  The New Year has come and gone and it’s back to writing.  For this week, I’ll continue on the worldbuilding topic and focus on the first steps to developing a fantasy world.

Earth or Not Earth

One of the very first things you need to think about when creating your own fantasy world is to consider your sub-genre.  Are you writing an Urban Fantasy in which the world is similar to the Earth we know but with fantastical differences?  Or are you setting your story in a totally different place, like in Epic Fantasy?  Each of these choices has its own set of questions that must be answered. In this post, we’ll take a look at what you need to consider when developing an alternate Earth.

What’s in a Name – Fantasy Worldbuilding Basics Part I

“What’s in a name?”  When Shakespeare penned that infamous question so many centuries ago, he was speaking of the idea that the essence of an object or person remains the same regardless of what it is called.  Indeed, the rose that Juliet spoke of during her not-so-secret ponderings on the nature of Romeo has many names—a different one in each human language—yet they all refer to the same flower.  So what does this mean for us as writers or in terms of worldbuilding in general?

Please Excuse the Absence!

UPDATE 12/15/2017 – Still sick, guys. The cold has gotten worse and added an inner ear infection to boot. I have a new post planned and will have it up as soon as I can!

I promised in my first post that I’d write at least once a week.  Unfortunately, I’ve had a bit of a forced absence this week in the form of a rather nasty cold.  I will have a new post up in the next few days!

World of Verdin

Setting the Stage in Raven’s Deep

A lot of authors use their own names as the title of their author’s website.  George R.R. Martin has www.georgerrmartin.com. Stephen King has www.stephenking.com, and so on and so forth.  So it’s only natural that you may find yourself wondering why in the world I’ve called this site “Raven’s Deep?”  Well, it all has to do with setting.

Blogging

A Fantasy Writer’s First Step into the Blogosphere…

Writing a first blog post. Sounds easy, doesn’t it?  At least, that’s what I thought when I first decided to do it.

When I sat down to write this, I was excited, eager, and ready to connect to the “interwebs” through my very first blog post.  I was confident that the words would be flowing the moment I opened my laptop…but that didn’t happen.  Instead, I found myself staring at an empty page that screamed “You have no idea what you’re doing!”
